About the Book
Where I live : A first geography book for young children in the State of Pennsylvania teaches children about geography in a fun and personal way.
Pennsylvania teachers can use this new book, Where I Live, A first geography book for young children in the State of Pennsylvania to convey the basic knowledge about geography and how it relates to where their students live. This book was written specifically for children in Pennsylvania. Where I Live will be an essential element of your kindergarten, first, second, and third grade curriculum as it incorporates geography into your literacy program.
Long before Google Earth, Debra wrote the original story in the late 90’s for her classroom. Now beautifully illustrated, children explore geography beginning high above the earth in a rocket ship where they learn the names of the planets. They then land and discover the oceans, continents, countries, states, counties, cities, townships and boroughs all the way to their home address.
With activities to record their personal information, the book helps build language skills and prepares them to be successful readers, learners, and citizens of the world. This picture book is written for children of all ages depending on how it is presented and includes geography songs and games. *You may request the ‘Where I Live Teacher and Parents Resource Book’ to reinforce concepts taught in this book by contacting the author [email protected].
About The Author
Debra Hervitz is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University with a degree in Elementary Education and a Reading Specialist Certification. Debra has been teaching children and families the joy of reading for over 35 years. Because of her passion for childhood literacy and her mantra, “learning begins at home”, Debra is now affectionately known to all as “Mrs. Read”.
Through her many years of teaching she discovered that children need to know where they live as well as the vocabulary to describe these places. This is why she started the Where I Live books for young children. The first book in the series is titled, Where I Live: A first geography book for young children in the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania area. This book was such a success that she now has her second book titled, Where I Live: A first geography book for young children in the State of Pennsylvania.
Debra is now retired from teaching but she is able to continue to share her expertise in teaching through her Where I Live books. She is very grateful for her awesome illustrator Sheena Hisiro and literacy advocate and superb children’s author Floyd Stokes for bringing her vision to reality as well as all her family and friends.
Currently the Where I Live Book series is available at many local bookstores in the Greater Central PA region as well as museum gift shops.
Debra lives in Harrisburg, PA with her husband and enjoys spending time with her children and grandchildren.
